Michael Schurton is a volunteer extraordinaire who gives of his time, talent, money, energy, creativity, and resources freely and because of his love and compassion for people in general. Volunteering for him is not work but volunteerism is his life. There are many individuals who volunteer to accept the challenge as leaders or workers of various organisations in order to work to better the quality of life in our communities and the nation. There are many individuals who seek to do volunteer work due to the status or reward and recognition, which they receive. However, His life has been one that is filled with evidence of one who truly have a heart for unselfish and devoted service. Throughout many communities, he has left testimonies of love, compassion, dedication and unfailing commitment to the upliftment of others.
He has shown great depth for leadership and fortitude with the organisations he has volunteered to work. He has founded a youth organisation with his personal savings so that others may improve their quality of life. That organisation has contributed millions of dollars to various projects. He has personally engineered a comprehensive marketing programme, especially events marketing that has realised millions of dollars in sponsorship from various companies. His work with children and teens speaks to a special quality of the human spirit and a heart's desire for genuine service to the neglected, needy, abandoned, disillusioned, and disenfranchised of the Jamaican society.

I WRITE to nominate Word Time Ministries of Jamaica for the Gleaner Honour Award 2003 in the category of Voluntary Services. Word Time Ministries of Jamaica, this year, is celebrating its ninth year of service to the nation. From a small humble beginning in St. James by a team of Christian young people, the ministry during this short time has expanded its role from that of Bible distribution to the adoption of a number of children homes, food distribution and many other areas in order to create a better society and to lay the foundation for an ordered society which cares for the disenfranchised.
Word Time Ministries of Jamaica is a non-profit youth organisation which was founded by a small group of Christian youth primarily for the purpose of distributing Bibles and other Christian literature to students in primary, junior high and all-age schools, civic leaders and other individuals in need of the Word of God. In addition, the ministry has also identified and addressed other social issues, which exists in hospitals, children's homes and other institutions.
AIDING CHILDREN
The ministry has staged numerous events for children in homes, schools and communities. Among these are sports championships, cultural championships, fruit festival, back-to-school presentations and fun days. Sunday evening saw a spectacular array of talent at the finals show of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) Jamaica Gospel Song Competition 2007, with Garfield Reid emerged as the winner with his song ‘Signs of the Times’.
Garfield Reid, the winner of the JCDC Gospel Song Competition, accepts his cheque for $400,000.00 and the JCDC's Jamaica Gospel Song Trophy. Held at the National Indoor Sports Centre each performer sound and look their best.
Special Guests artistes Jermaine Edwards and Papa San both gave excellent performances sending the audience in a frenzy of praise and worship. Clive Warren, the 2006 Gospel Song Winner, also performed.
The finalists gave the audience a taste of what was to come with their warm up songs.
After a 15-minute intermission, it was time for the main event. Banners and loud “Wooo’s” in support of favourite finalists could be seen and heard throughout the venue. Shelly-Ann Watson ministered energetically with her original ‘Year of the Church’, after which Hugh Miller gave a well-done rendition of his song ‘Blessed Is The Man.’ Sushann Holmes followed with her original, ‘You Still Care’, and then came Leon Denton with ‘Lead Me Home’.

‘Mek me take off me glasses so me can see you better!” said Courtney Cooke as he came onstage to give an excellent performance of his song ‘Gimme Pass’. Clad in the national colours, Natalder Butler then performed her song ‘Breakthrough’.
What seemed to be a true-life story was Antoinette Bradshaw’s song ‘Completely’ was surely a heartfelt song for both her and the audience. Nolan Brown was in full army gear for his very fitting song, ‘Armour’. Elect was up next with ‘Redeemer, Redeeming The Time’. Last but not least was Garfield Reid, whose creativity stood out, being the only performer with a dancer.
The judges were now left with the hard decision of deciding the winner for this year’s competition. But, there must be one winner.
Third-placed Courtney Cooke, among other prizes, was awarded a cash prize of $150,000, the Michael Schurton Trophy and an artiste development grant valued at $30,000. Antoinette Bradshaw, in second was awarded $200,000.00, the Word Time Ministries of Jmaiaca Trophy and an artiste development grant along with other awards. The winner and most outstanding performer Garfield Reid walk away with cash and prizes amounting to over $500,000. Reid closed the event with an encore performance of ‘Signs Of The Times’.

TORONTO, CANADA - The 2010 Canadian Championships kick off today in Toronto with a press conference featuring the hurdling duo of Perdita Felicien and Priscilla Lopes-Schliep at the flagship Nike Store on Bloor. Pickering’s Perdita Felicien and Whitby’s Priscilla Lopes Schliep will face off for the 31st time in their illustrious careers; Felicien currently has a slight head to head lead over Lopes-Schliep by a 16-14 count.
· Calgary, AB’s Jessica Zelinka will battle it out in 7 events over the course of 2 days. Zelinka is a 4-time Canadian Champion (2001, 04, 05, 08) taking the 2009 season off to have a baby.
· In the men’s shot put Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, BC enters as a 5-time Canadian Champion (2005-2009). Armstrong is also the Canadian record holder with a mark of 21.58m set earlier this season.
· Sultana Frizell of Perth, ON has improved the Canadian women’s hammer throw record in back to back years with a current personal and seasonal best mark of 72.74m.
· Simon Bairu of Regina, SK will tear up the track in the 10000m. Bairu broke the Canadian record in this event earlier this season; the mark had stood for 9-years.
In the wheelchair 1500m Josh Cassidy of Oakville, ON will look to continue his early season success; Cassidy has already captured the 2010 Canadian Marathon title and the prestigious London Marathon title.
On Thursday July 29th at 4:00pm runners will take to their marks as part of the 4x100m Corporate Relay Challenge. Anchoring each relay team are pop culture celebrities, track and field alumni as well as various Olympians, sporting icons and stars.

In the first sprint final of the meet Adrienne Power of Halifax, NS (Halifast Athletics) claimed her fourth Canadian title (3rd consecutive) in the 200m crossing the line in 23.47. In the men’s 200m race New Haven, PEI’s Jared Connaughton claimed the title in 20.66, re-claiming his title from 2008.
Winning two Canadian crowns today was Sherbrooke’s Eric Gauthier capturing both the 400m in 57.14 and 800m in 2:01.18 (T53 classification). Also recording back to back gold medals was Renee Foessel of the Cruisers club. Foessel won the shot put and javelin in the F37 classification with performances of 8.90m and 20.66m respectively.

The performances at Sports Champs 2010 was inspiring, memorable and electrifying on and off the tracks. The event which was held at the St. Andrew High School for Girls, Kingston, Jamaica unfolded into a delighted array of talent, skill, confidence and resilience.
Racquel Faircloth gospel recording and performing artiste rendered an unforgettable moving and powerful performance. Faircloth performed the song “Why not trust God again”. Her inspiring and melodic rendition of the song she recently wrote was well received. Racquel’s ministry in song was moving and touched the hearts of athletes, officials, spectators. Even persons as far as Half Way Tree who could hear her unmistakable voice piecing the sound system and on the airwaves of Word FM.
The new gospel artiste who has been performing since 2008 hails from the Washington Boulevard SDA Church. She expressed delight at having the opportunity to perform live at Sports Champs for the first time. “When I was invited by my good friend Julie Barrett, I really did not know what to expect. But now that I am here, this has been a great experience for me. I see Sports Champs as another great opportunity to reach young people” she said. She also expressed the view that there is a great need for young gospel artistes to actively seek opportunities to minister to young people. “Yes, I see that there is a need for us to seek ways to reach young people. I think we can make an impact on their lives. They will see us as examples and hopefully take a stand for the Lord” she said.
The outstanding performances and Ministry was not just in songs. The Jubilee Dominion Dance Ministry from the Jubilee Worship Centre located in Spanish Town, St. Catherine also represented well. They did not disappoint the audience. They performed to “I Believe” by Yolanda Adams. The group lead by Kay Johnson gave a contemporary rendition of the song which was in keeping with the theme of Sports Champs “Believe…Reach…Achieve". The group which has been performing for the past year is hoping to make another date with Sports Champs in 2011.
The Ministry in music, live performances, and dance was truly a blessing for all persons attending and participating at Champs. The performances were a rich source of inspiration and strength given the social climate and the uncertainties and challenges which affected many persons. Many athletes were affected by the state of emergency and curfews in Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine.
But another delighted performance was also in the making. Churches Cooperative Credit Union’s mascot, Thrifty Bee came buzzing. Thrifty Bee was a big hit with the children and adults alike. He danced and entertained well. The children surrounded the mascot. He showed them the latest dance moves to the songs of Jimmy Lalla, “Jump for Jesus”, “His name is Jesus” and “Blazin”. He was busy taking photographs with the athletes. Thrifty Bee also congratulated the athletes at the finish line.
But Thrifty Bee was not finished with champs. He was having so much fun he also decided to enter a race. This was going to be a race to see. Everyone thought that the other two athletes, Dean Jones and Garvin Grandison would surely beat the mascot. The Mascot was given a 50m head start. Then the starter set the race off to a clean start. The mascot tumbled and buzzed away. To everyone’s surprise as hard as the athletes tried they cold not catch Thrifty Bee. Thrifty Bee won his race and maybe became the first mascot to win a gold medal at a track meet. Dean Jones won silver and Garvin Grandison bronze medal.
It was a showcase of superb talent. It was a celebration of athletic brilliance. Believe it or not, Sports Champs 2010 was a blessing. The Opening Ceremony was chaired by Lisa-gaye Anderson, Board Secretary. She said that despite all the challenges this was the day to rejoice and celebrate because champs we indeed here. The Ceremony also featured the song ministry of Shena Gordon who sang the national anthem. Athletes marched confidently and excitedly to the music of “Chariots of Fire”. Chariots of Fire is the musical score by Greek electronic composer and artist Vangelis for the British film Chariots of Fire.
The athletes and officials were lead into the parade by the Chaplain, Rev. Ascott McCormack. Sports Champs was filled with excitement and loaded with fun and great performances. The day’s event was also fortified with a great worship session. Peta-gaye Dixon carried the Jamaican Flag. Executive Director of the Ministry, Rev. Dr. Hope McCormack welcomed all the athletes from various children’s homes, schools, service clubs and churches. Chairman of the Ministry Michael Schurton J.P. officially declared Sports Champs 2010 opened. He urged the athletes to liver the theme of Sports Champs 2010, “Believe…Reach.. Achieve” and also to realize the Olympic dream.
The interviews were great on both Word FM and CVM Television. The commentaries of the races were both comprehensive and exciting. The music from Jimmy Lalla, Judith Gayle and other artistes created an atmosphere of praise, worship, adoration and celebration. Sports Champs 2010 was the best ever in the decade old event. It was only by faith that it happened. Only by the mighty hand of the Lord made it possible. Sports Champs 2010 was a reality because we believed.

The music from Jimmy Lalla, Judith Gayle and other artistes created an atmosphere of praise, worship, adoration and celebration. Sports Champs 2010 was the best ever in the decade old event. Faith’s superb performances and inspiriting determination made the Sunshine Crew shinned once again at the 10th Annual Sports Championships. Team Faith's triumphant march for the title was a memorable victory held at St. Andrew High School, St. Andrew, Jamaica. June 26, 2010 proved to be Faith’s day to rejoice and be glad.
Team Faith deservedly was crowned champions with 2380 points. Faith recorded a medal haul of 14 gold, 8 silver and 10 bronze medals. Faith also mined another 8 gold medals in the quality awards, a total of 23 gold medals. Team Hope former fives time champions placed second with 2175 points, and secured 11 gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze. The season’s defending champions Team Love plummeted to last position with 1415 points. Team Love tried desperately hard but could only managed a record low medal tally. Love won 3 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze medals.
Athletes from several primary, junior high, community groups, colleges and universities gave brilliant performances thrilling the brave spectators who came to witness the historic event. Rohan Walker’s scintillating record breaking performances was instrumental in Team Faith’s historic win at Sports Champs 2010. He won emphatic victories in the Class 2 and Class 3 100m, 200m, 400, and the Class 2 and Class 3, 4x100 relays.
In the first event of the day billed as Keenness of the Kids it was a purple sweep as Team Hope captured purple coloured gold, silver and bronze medals in the girls Under 10 Prep School. Hope’s nine year old Shinola Emmanuel (6:81) of Central Branch All Age was the first gold medalist of the meet, and teammate Shameeka McIntosh (7:34 ), silver and Deidre-Kay Smith (8:38) of King’s Way Prep won bronze. Shimuel Panthon (Hope) of New Providence Primary had Team Hope celebrating early when he won gold clocking 6:00 seconds flat ahead of Kevon Bennett (Faith), Maxfield Park Primary, 6:35 seconds for silver, and Kemoy Brown (Love) of John Mills, 7:18 seconds earned bronze.
Faith registered several one two victories. In the Class 2 100m girls both Saralee Roberts and Keelia Parkinson of Central Branch excited the crowd with their victories. Saralee Roberts posted 13:64 seconds to win gold, while Keelia Parkinson took silver in 14:02 seconds. Mistry Chisholm (Love) of Windward Road clocked 14:94 seconds for bronze.
Keelia Parkinson (Faith) proved her worth with an upset victory in the Class 3 200m. Keelia won a memorable gold in 30:86 seconds while favourite and teammate Chevel Walker earned silver clocking 31:17 seconds and Janel Porter 31:42 seconds. Keelia’s victory was the defining moment for Team Faith and secured a solid position in the points standings.
Rohan Walker (Faith) was superb in the 100m Class 3 Boys striking a record gold clocking 11:54 seconds, ahead of training partner Cannigga Williams (Faith), who posted 11:86 seconds to take silver, while Reginal Russell (Hope) took bronze in11:92 seconds.

The excitement was now fever pitch in the Match of the Members, 100m Female. Roxanne Schurton (Faith), University of Technology bolted from the blocks and posted a great run to clock 14:22 seconds. Roxanne Schurton who led the race for the most part up to the last 90 meters bravely held on for a well earned silver medal. Marathon runner Kim Kerry Thompson (Hope) of University College of the Caribbean (14:19) just managed to strike gold and Trevesa Ashman (Faith), University of the West Indies (14:59) earned bronze. Michael McLeish (Faith) of MPIXEL made no mistake in the Match of the Members, 100m Male and cruised to victory in 14:34 seconds ahead of Richard Lawrence (Hope) of JUTC who settled for silver in a time of 14:42 seconds.
The Showcase of the Sponsors created excitement and intrigue. Kadian Dyke of Churches Co-operative Credit Union Limited representing Team Hope took gold, while Kenicia Smith of Island Grill representing Team Faith took silver and Patrice Grandison of Optimist Club of UWI Mona representing Team Faith won bronze. Pandemonium broke out as another thriller of the event unfolded in the Showcase of the Sponsors 100m Males. Dwight, “Thrifty Bee the Mascot” (Hope) representing Churches Co-operative Credit Union Limited won gold in a time of 15:71. Dean Jones (Hope) his teammate tried hard for a sliver posting 16:74 and Garvin Grandison (Faith) representing Optimist Club of UWI Mona, bronze 16:84. Thrifty Bee was given a 50m head start and buzzed and tumbled his way to the finish line. The crowd erupted in sheer delighted as the mascot was a gold medalist at Sports Champs 2010.
The 400m Boys Class 2 was a superb display of determination and courage. Cannigga Williams of Team Faith produced a scorching last 10 metres sprint to catch and nip Team Love’s Kemar Brown at the finish-line in 59.05 seconds. Kemar Brown (59:07) lead the race and looked the winner, but Williams, fueled with determination and courage shone through all the odds and won a golden gold for Team Faith. Tekil Edwards (1:16:25) took the pedestrian bronze.
The girls 400m Class 2 was a extremely close call with Team Faith’s Chevel Walker posted victory in a time of 1:10:68 to strike gold, while Team Love’s Lisa Blackwood (1:10:72) held on for a hard earned silver and Team Hope’s Chantell Henry (1:13:28) was a happy camper with bronze.
Also playing a major role in Faith’s triumphant march was Shennare Williams of Vere Technical High School. Shennare was simply sensational. Shennare clocked a record breaking 5:62 seconds in the girls Class 3 50m to win her first gold medal. Williams defeated Chantena Downer (Love) 5:82 seconds of Windward Road and bronze medalist Peta-gaye Dixon (Hope) 5:88 seconds of Vere Technical High School.
Shennare also captured two sliver medals. It was a spectacle performance in the Class 3 100m. The dynamic athlete burned the tracks in the Class 2 200m missed gold with a time of 15:04 seconds. She powered away from the start up to the last 90m but was put outpaced by a last surge by gold medalist Sashel Smallwood (Hope) of Central branch clocking 14:93, while Chantena Downer (Love) was left in the field with 17:59 seconds. Then Shennare came back in the Class 2 200m, clocking 30:13 to win silver. Lasann Lucas (Hope) of Central Branch won gold in 29:55 and Salalee Roberts (Faith) of Central Branch took bronze in 31:03 seconds.
Shennare tried for another win in the Class 2 400m. Unfortunately she pulled-up on the home stretch. However, Shennare was determined and anchored her team to victory in the Class 3 4x100m relays winning gold in 56:66. Faith won the championships in an electrifying and convincing victory held at the St. Andrew High School for Girls, Kingston, Jamaica.
Rohan Walker’s emphatic victories in the Class 2 and Class 3 100m, 200m, 400m, and the Class 2 and Class 3, 4x100 relays was the driving force of Team Faith’s historic win at Sports Champs 2010. Team Faith's dramatic, exciting and triumphant march for the title was a great victory. The Sunshine Crew decked out in maroon and gold and with the eagle as their symbol secured their second title and rewrote the history books to be first time Champion Team. Team Faith amassed 2380 points with a jubilant team of young athletes who mined 14 track gold, 8 silver and 10 bronze medals. Faith also mined another 8 gold medals in the quality awards, a total of 23 gold medals.
Team Hope gave a four star performance and placed second with 2175 points. Team Hope, the purple power, symbolized by stars, pulled out all the stops and secured 11 gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze medals. Team Love only managed to score 1415 points and scraped 3 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze medals from the medal mines left by Team Faith. Despite all the prevailing social, economic and environmental conditions in Kingston, Jamaica, the sun indeed shinned again for Team Faith. Faith finally emerged both title holders and Champion team for the first time in the history of the decade old Sports Championships. At the inaugural games in 2001 Team Faith while winning the title based on their track performances was not declared the champion team as the team lost valuable points for the character awards.
Team Faith’s wining aggregation of the faith eagles was lead by captain Rohan Walker (Jamaica College), Shennare Williams (Vere Technical High), Junior Francis (Ocho Rios High), and Cannigga Williams, Oshane Shaw, Keelia Parkinson, Chevel Walker, Saralee Roberts, Onyxia Young and Sheneil McNeil, all from Central Branch All Age. Team Faith handed a handsome defeat to the defending champions. Team Love was stunned, dazed, frazzled and dazzled. Team Love’s only individual gold medal was won by Monifa Green (Central Branch) clocking 5:88 seconds in the Girls Under 12 50m.

Rohan Walker’s emphatic victories in the Class 2 and Class 3 100m, 200m, 400m, and the Class 2 and Class 3, 4x100 relays was the driving force of Team Faith’s historic win at Sports Champs 2010. Team Faith's dramatic, exciting and triumphant march for the title was a great victory. The Sunshine Crew decked out in maroon and gold and with the eagle as their symbol secured their second title and rewrote the history books to be first time Champion Team. Team Faith amassed 2380 points with a jubilant team of young athletes who mined 14 track gold, 8 silver and 10 bronze medals. Faith also mined another 8 gold medals in the quality awards, a total of 23 gold medals.
Team Hope gave a four star performance and placed second with 2175 points. Team Hope, the purple power, symbolized by stars, pulled out all the stops and secured 11 gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze medals. Team Love only managed to score 1415 points and scraped 3 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze medals from the medal mines left by Team Faith. Despite all the prevailing social, economic and environmental conditions in Kingston, Jamaica, the sun indeed shinned again for Team Faith. Faith finally emerged both title holders and Champion team for the first time in the history of the decade old Sports Championships. At the inaugural games in 2001 Team Faith while winning the title based on their track performances was not declared the champion team as the team lost valuable points for the character awards.
Team Faith’s wining aggregation of the faith eagles was lead by captain Rohan Walker (Jamaica College), Shennare Williams (Vere Technical High), Junior Francis (Ocho Rios High), and Cannigga Williams, Oshane Shaw, Keelia Parkinson, Chevel Walker, Saralee Roberts, Onyxia Young and Sheneil McNeil, all from Central Branch All Age. Team Faith handed a handsome defeat to the defending champions. Team Love was stunned, dazed, frazzled and dazzled. The highly motivated and electrifying performances of the sunshine crew plummeted Team Love to last position. Team Love’s only individual gold medal was won by Monifa Green (Central Branch) clocking 5:88 seconds in the Girls Under 12 50m.
